“Living by the sea, living the sea”

As part of the initiative “Living by the sea, living the sea”, scheduled to take place in Genova Voltri from May 27 to 29, 2025, researchers Erica Carlig and Laura Ghigliotti from the CNR – Institute for the Study of Anthropogenic Impacts and Sustainability in the Marine Environment (IAS) will actively participate, representing Spoke 3 of the RAISE project.
The event, promoted by the Utrimare Association through its affiliates F. Durante and Salvamento, will primarily target younger generations. Its objective is to foster awareness among children and adolescents regarding marine culture by creating a dialogue between traditional knowledge and scientific understanding. Through hands-on workshops and practical demonstrations, the initiative will provide an opportunity to rediscover the sea not only as a place of leisure but also as a vital ecosystem to be understood, protected, and experienced responsibly.
During the event, the marine biologists from CNR-IAS will lead interactive sessions focused on observing local marine flora and fauna. These scientific education activities will actively engage students, introducing them to essential concepts in marine biology and ecology. The researchers will present the delicate balances that govern marine ecosystems and highlight the main threats posed by human activities, using an accessible and informative approach.
Special emphasis will be placed on showcasing innovative technologies developed within Spoke 3 of RAISE, aimed at the monitoring, observation, and sustainable management of marine environments. These solutions, resulting from multidisciplinary research and collaboration among scientific institutions and public bodies, will be presented as practical tools to tackle ecological transition challenges and to promote evidence-based marine governance.
In parallel, the program will also include traditional activities, such as the historic anchovy salting demonstration, passed down by local fishermen. This aspect of the event will serve to enhance the cultural heritage associated with the sea and ensure the continuity of traditional maritime knowledge.
With the participation of researchers from CNR-IAS, the event will gain significant scientific and educational value, offering young attendees an impactful learning experience and contributing to the development of environmental awareness based on direct observation, knowledge, and shared responsibility.
The involvement of Erica Carlig and Laura Ghigliotti, representing Spoke 3 of the RAISE project, will stand as a testament to the commitment of the public research system to environmental education and to strengthening the bond between science, local communities and the territory.
