RAISE AT THE THEATRE

Friday, March 27, at 8:00 p.m., the Teatro della Gioventù will host the third and final evening of RAISEmotion, an artistic project born from the encounter between contemporary creativity and scientific research within the innovation ecosystem RAISE – Robotics and AI for Socio-economic Empowerment.

The event marks the concluding moment of a journey accompanying the final phase of the three-year activities of RAISE and offers the public an opportunity to explore research themes through diverse yet complementary artistic languages.

RAISEmotion proposes a dialogue between performing arts, sound research, and visual arts that transforms data, scientific results, and research processes into a shared cultural experience. In this project, art becomes a tool capable of making the trajectories of scientific and technological research perceptible, encouraging a direct encounter between the scientific community, citizens, and project stakeholders.

The project develops under the scientific supervision of Marco Faimali, with contributions from the artistic studio Stellare, visual artists Silvia Badalotti and Giuseppe La Spada, with curatorship by Maria Pina Usai, and the theatre company La Pozzanghera, curated by Lidia Giannuzzi.

Together they shape a transdisciplinary platform that places scientific research and artistic practices on the same level, constructing a collective narrative around the themes explored within RAISE.

Throughout the evening, sound, image, and theatre interact as parallel languages interpreting the data and visions of the project. The studio Stellare works at the intersection of sound, data, and space, developing audiovisual works and immersive environments that investigate the aesthetic potential of data sonification, transforming complex datasets into musical material and soundscapes capable of making often-invisible scientific phenomena perceptible.

The works presented within RAISEmotion translate the ecosystem’s main research areas into immersive artistic experiences.

In the Port / Listening Session, developed by Stellare together with Giuseppe La Spada, transforms the Port of Genoa into a sonic and visual landscape that reflects the complexity of logistical flows and human relationships shaping the harbour space. Data on maritime traffic and underwater noise pollution become musical material through the software Ocean, composing a constantly evolving score. With L’Utopie du Corps, created with Silvia Badalotti, anonymous data on pedestrian flows and weather conditions around the Ospedale Policlinico San Martino generate images and sounds through algorithmic and artificial intelligence systems, giving form to a reflection on the body as the origin of urban space. The project Twins, developed with Giuseppe La Spada, explores the concept of the digital twin applied to human beings, creating a sonic and visual digital counterpart that interacts with the perception of the audience. Finally, The Ocean Without Us translates scientific data collected in the Ligurian Sea on the presence of microplastics into a sensory experience: frequencies, rhythms, and images convey the fragile balance between marine ecosystems and human pressure, inviting the audience to reflect on the relationship between the environment and human activities.

The theatrical dimension enters this creative device through the work of the company La Pozzanghera, an ensemble active for nearly forty years. Through interviews with researchers and discussions with the scientific teams of the project’s four Spokes, the company developed a writing and stage experimentation process that translates scientific content into theatrical storytelling.

The creative process follows a dynamic similar to that of research itself: listening, writing, rehearsals, revision, and the gradual construction of characters and relationships. From this work emerge four short theatrical pieces written and directed by Lidia Giannuzzi and performed by Domenico Baldini, Roberta De Donatis, Francesco Maria Giacobbe, and Martina Pittaluga, with sound design by Lorenzo Marmorato.

Each piece draws inspiration from one of the ecosystem’s key research areas. Kintsugi addresses the theme of the inclusive city through a dialogue between a man and an AI-powered urban camera. Another Beat explores the relationship between the human body and its digital replica through the story of a heart and its artificial twin. Specie aliena portrays the port as a place of encounters, migrations, and technological transformations. La prima cosa reflects on environmental issues and climate change through a choral narrative that leads to the breath of the Earth. In this final piece, sound design is curated by Stellare.

Through these artistic languages, RAISEmotion offers a shared reflection on the role of technology and artificial intelligence in contemporary society.

AI emerges not as a replacement for human capabilities, but as a tool that expands them, opening new spaces for imagination, creativity, and responsibility.

The final evening of RAISEmotion invites citizens, the scientific community, institutions, and stakeholders to take part in a public moment of encounter and reflection – an opportunity to celebrate the results of three years of work within the RAISE ecosystem and to explore, through art and research, new perspectives on the future of innovation.

Admission to the evening event is free until all seats are filled.
