Kicking off August 24–31 at the University of Genoa: DRIMS², the Doctoral Summer School in Robotics and Intelligent Machines, promoted by the RAISE project.
From August 24 to 31, 2025, the University of Genoa will host the third edition of the Doctoral Summer School in Robotics and Intelligent Machines (DRIMS²). The school aims to provide advanced knowledge and skills for designing and developing robots and intelligent systems capable of operating in complex environments such as biomedical, industrial, and service sectors. DRIMS² is primarily intended for PhD students enrolled in the DRIM program, but is also open to students from other related doctoral programs.
Organized as part of the National Doctorate Program in Robotics and Intelligent Machines (DRIM), the initiative is included among the activities promoted by P8 of the training program of Spoke 5 within the RAISE – Robotics and AI for Socio-economic Empowerment project. RAISE is funded by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) through Investment 1.5 (M4C2) of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and coordinated by a consortium of excellence including the National Research Council (CNR), the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), and the University of Genoa (UniGe).
This initiative represents a unique opportunity for advanced training aimed at PhD students and young researchers, offering an intensive and interdisciplinary program that integrates theory, applications, and hands-on labs in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence.
“We are excited to host the third edition of the Doctoral Summer School in Robotics and Intelligent Machines in Genoa, in the beautiful setting of Nervi. Thanks to the support of RAISE, one of this year’s key themes will focus on Robot-Based Additive Manufacturing, giving participants the opportunity to explore the intersection between robotics and advanced manufacturing technologies,” says Prof. Giovanni Berselli (University of Genoa and ADVR, Italian Institute of Technology), Coordinator of the PhD Program in Mechanical, Energy, and Management Engineering at the University of Genoa.
“The DRIMS² Summer School was launched three years ago alongside the National PhD in Robotics and Intelligent Machines. Since then, it has become a key gathering point for doctoral students. It’s a unique opportunity to connect, share ideas and passions, and lay the foundations for future projects and friendships. In short, it’s about building the future of robotics and intelligent machines research together,” adds Prof. Antonio Sgorbissa, Coordinator of the National PhD in Robotics and Intelligent Machines.
Internationally Renowned Keynote Speakers
The DRIMS² 2025 program will feature world-class experts, offering participants valuable insights into emerging trends in the field:
Francesco Nori – Director of Research & Development, Google DeepMind. A leading figure in robot control and AI applied to locomotion and human-machine interaction;
Davide Scaramuzza – Professor at the University of Zurich, Director of the Robotics and Perception Group, pioneer in autonomous drones and computer vision techniques;
Arash Ajoudani – Director of the HRI² Lab at the Italian Institute of Technology, expert in collaborative robotics and physical human-robot interaction;
Gianluca Palli – Professor at the University of Bologna, head of the Robotics and Automation Lab, specializing in advanced manipulation and control;
Elena De Momi – Professor of Robotics at Politecnico di Milano, with solid experience in medical robotics and neurorobotics.
Participants will have the opportunity to delve into topics ranging from mechatronic and sensor design to artificial perception and machine learning; from human-machine interaction and adaptive control to the development of solutions for real-world, highly dynamic environments.
The school will take place at the Department of Mechanical, Energy, Management and Transportation Engineering of the University of Genoa, located at Via Andrea Provana di Leyni 15.
