CROSSROADS Summer School 2025: Technology, Ethics and Society

As part of the activities of Program P8 – Boosting PhD Students’ Career, coordinated by Spoke 5 of RAISE Liguria within the framework of the Training Program, a highly qualified educational initiative has been developed for PhD students and early-career researchers working not only in science and technology, but also in economics, law, and the social sciences.
Within this context, the CROSSROADS Doctorate Summer School will take place from 14 to 18 July 2025 at the historic Villa Giustiniani-Cambiaso, home to the Polytechnic School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Genoa.
The Summer School is designed as a transdisciplinary space for dialogue and co-learning on emerging topics related to artificial intelligence and robotics, with a strong focus on the social, legal, economic, and ethical implications of advanced technologies. The initiative aims to foster interdisciplinary exchange and promote a systemic understanding of the challenges posed by the integration of intelligent technologies into society.
The training program includes lectures by renowned experts, interactive group work sessions, and student-led presentations. Activities are structured to encourage active participation and critical thinking, with a focus on real-world case studies, future scenarios, and practical implications in key sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, the environment, and civil society.
Key topics addressed will include:
– safety of robots and autonomous systems;
– technologies for digital health and personalized medicine;
– regulation of artificial intelligence;
– reliability and explainability of AI systems;
– ethical and social implications of emerging technologies;
– bio-inspired robotics and artificial intelligence.
The school is primarily intended for PhD students from STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and ELSE disciplines (Economics, Law, Social Sciences, Ethics), but is also open to scientists and professionals interested in exploring the relationship between technological innovation and society from a multidisciplinary perspective. The number of participants is limited to ensure a dynamic and interactive learning environment.
Participation is free of charge, but registration is required via the official portal.
Further information about the program, speakers, and objectives of the school is available on the official website.
