Urban technologies for social inclusion

Spoke 1 is participating in the Biennale dello Spazio Pubblico 2025 with the workshop “Learning Accessibility and Inclusion”, scheduled for 19 September in Rome (2:00 – 6:00 p.m.).

The initiative is part of the call promoted by the Italian National Institute of Urban Planning (INU) Community “Città accessibili a tuttə” and represents an important opportunity for dialogue on the themes of universal accessibility and inclusion.

On this occasion, Michela Spagnuolo (CNR) will present Spoke 1’s contribution with the paper “Urban Technologies for Inclusive Engagement – How Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Can Help Develop an Accessible and Inclusive Urban Context”. The paper explores the results achieved in the development of technological demonstrators, with particular focus on the one dedicated to mobility. The aim is to highlight how emerging technologies can support the creation of inclusive urban environments, designed to meet the needs of people of different conditions, ages, and abilities.

The workshop is part of a broader path launched in 2016 by the “Città accessibili a tuttə” Community, structured around three interrelated actions:
– a workshop within the Biennale dello Spazio Pubblico;
– a conference as part of Urbanpromo;
– an open-access publication of selected papers.

These initiatives place learning at the center—both at the individual and collective levels—with the goal of promoting more accessible cities and territories, while strengthening people’s autonomy and freedom.

Universal accessibility remains a policy priority: Legislative Decree 222/2023 introduced measures for the redevelopment of public services from an inclusive and accessible perspective, recognizing these aspects as fundamental rights. The 2030 agenda underscores the need to ensure that public and green spaces are healthy, safe, and truly accessible for all: women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

The participation of Spoke 1 in the Biennale dello Spazio Pubblico 2025 thus represents a significant step toward integrating research, technological innovation, and inclusive urban planning. The proposed approach goes beyond sectoral solutions, addressing the complexity of urban systems and promoting interconnected, multidisciplinary, and multiscalar strategies.
